Key Trends In Web Dev & Design 2024

Recently, we co-hosted a live webinar with BugHerd and Promethean Research. The aim was to reveal and elaborate on the latest industry data and trends on how digital agencies create for the web in 2024.

Our guests were Steve Neville, CEO of BugHerd, and Nicholas Petroski, founder of Promethean Research. We did a deep dive into various trends shaping how developers and designers approach web dev and design work today. Below are the key highlights and a link to the full report and webinar.

The Highlights of Web Dev & Design in 2024

Tools

Many professionals are using Figma and Adobe Illustrator for design tasks, while developers primarily rely on VS Code for development work.

AI & Automation

A significant 52% of respondents report that AI is currently impacting their work. Among developers, about half are utilizing AI for code generation, though a smaller portion use it for tasks like syntax correction, structure optimization, or quality assurance. On the design side, 41% of designers are not using AI assistants, but when they do, it’s mostly for tasks like image editing and enhancement. AI usage in areas such as wireframing, prototyping, and accessibility testing remains very low.

While AI is already influencing web development, its full potential impact is yet to be realized. In the future, AI is expected to replace a much greater portion of manual work than it does today.

Web Development and Design Agency Work

The number of mobile apps being developed is notably low, with most agencies (85%) building fewer than 25 websites per year. While a lot of content is being produced, most of it is not focused on creating highly interactive or complex websites.

Content Management Systems (CMS)

A large majority, 83%, of respondents reported using a CMS, which also had the highest favorability among tools used.

Low-code/No-code CMS Tools

Despite some benefits, such as faster and cheaper site delivery and giving designers more control over the process, overall sentiment toward low-code/no-code CMS solutions is negative.

Hosting Decisions

When it comes to hosting, performance and reliability are seen as the most crucial factors. WP Engine is a popular choice, and hosting decisions are almost always made jointly by both the client and the agency.

The Key Takeaways

  • AI is top of mind for most web development professionals, but there’s a lot further to go.
  • Clients are expecting AI efficiencies and benefits before the industry has been able to achieve these.
  • Most digital agencies build fewer than 25 sites a year, opting to increase project complexity vs. deliver more sites as they grow.
